Dasha versus the Blackberry
I finally copied a bunch of photos of my Blackberry and there were surprisingly large number of photos of the little princess out on the green couch. I'm not sure why I took so many. Maybe it's just because he is so damn cute.

Hilltop Hoods
Last Saturday an Aussie rap group called Hilltop Hoods took the stage in NYC. The last time I saw them play was way back in 2009 when they did a gig at ANU in Canberra. I never really got into Aussie Hip Hop but for some reason really liked these guys.
Anyway they were playing at some joint down near Chinatown so we got a bit of a work crew together and headed along. It was really quite cool. I think 80% of the people there were Aussies. They played a couple of their old tracks which are the songs I really liked. The crowd went pretty ballistic. Good times.

Why NYC Rocks part 32
I'd become so accustomed to defaulting to get Japanese when I wanted delivery that I'd kind of forgotten to look elsewhere. Anyway recently I introduced myself to the joys of Seamless. It's a website where you can order delivery from hundreds of different places and it's super easy to use. Last night I was not sure what to have and thought what is one thing I love but have never had delivered? Lobster Rolls. Sure enough I found a place on 23rd called Claw and snagged a lobster roll at 9.30pm at night. And yes it was sensational. NYC rocks the lobster claw.

Spring in the Village
NYC has seen a serious transformation in the past week. Tracy won't know what has hit her when she gets back from London. The weather really broke this week and all the blossoms started coming out on the trees. It really is a very nice time of year in the city. The streets are shaded with the color of spring and people are out and about in those traditional New York numbers.
My favorite walk in NYC is along West 4th Street from 8th to 7th Avenue. It's really pumping at the moment with all the cafes having put their tables out and is a real pleasure strolling along aimlessly, dog in one hand, coffee in the other.
Rat bag is loving the warm weather and wants to permanently be walking round getting attention from people on the streets. Lucky I've got three new dog walkers coming in a week!

Linsanity
Those more sporting inclined may have heard the latest buzz in NYC is a guy called Jeremy Lin. He breaks the more typical profile of a basketball player (Asian, from Harvard) and has captured the public's imagination. He was picked up by the Knicks for a steal and spent much of the start of the season on the bench. He finally got his opportunity to get out on the court a couple of weeks ago and has been smashing it. It's done wonders for the Knicks. Ticket prices have gone through the roof. Even shares in the company which owns the building have gone up.
Anyway last night I was fortunate to get an invite to a box at the Garden. I've been there many times before but never like this. It was amazing to see how the other half experience a game. You get whisked in a side entrance and get up to your level via elevator. A lot different to the multiple escalators I normally get up to the nose bleed section.
The box itself is truly amazing. Private bathroom, unlimited beer and wine, standing room and really spacious and comfortable seats which make you feel like you're hanging over the court. Even a butler type guy to make sure everything is topped up. Tracy would have been in heaven. There was a massive bowl of chicken tenders and a plate full of every type of cookie and brownie you could imagine. Delicious.
The game itself was against the Pacers. It was pretty much a walkover and the Knicks smashed it.
Sorry family, it's back to the nose bleeds when we go to the game in a couple of weeks.

Rock (and Roll) Away
Last week was quite a monumental week in New York City. We're both hoping it was not a teaser but the weather improved remarkably and it was the first sign that winter was really coming to an end. I think I've blogged before but this winter really has been anticlimactic and was nothing compared to the 2010-11 monster that we had.
I remember my first year here. It was around this time that I left NYC and went to France for a month. When I returned something felt different and it was that little buds of green had shot out from all the trees and the bleak empty feel of the city in winter was beginning its transformation towards summer. We're not quite there yet with green but equally promising was that last Thursday was the first night of the year that cafes and restaurants put their tables out on the sidewalks for some alfresco love. For foodies like us this was very exciting.
The good weather extended to this weekend and we thought we'd make an escape from the city to the beaches of Rockaway. Rockaway is about an hour's subway from Manhattan on the A train. It's a massive stretch of beach along the eastern edge of Brooklyn. We were quite excited as dogs are allowed on the beach until May 1 so we thought it would be a great opportunity to get Dasha on the sand again.
The subway to the beach was a lazy 10 minute walk through Truman Show style housing. The beach is bordered by a boardwalk which runs as far as the eye can see. I think we might do our summer bike ride along it this year. We headed straight for the sand and Dasha was absolutely loving it trying to chase every seagull possible. There was nobody around and we practically had the beach to ourselves so we eventually let him off the leash for a bit of a run. We don't do this very often and I was quite nervous but he was well behaved and didn't go running off.
So if you're wondering what a New York City beach is like then let's just say it. I'd been to Coney Island (Gross) on the south side and Long Beach (swimmable) which is further North East and this kind of sits in the middle from a cleanliness standpoint. The sands ok and the water was surprisingly clear but it isn't no Wye River.
