Shelter Island, New York

It sounds so exotic but in actual fact it's on the far end of Long Island between the North and South Forks. I've got no idea how we came across this place but decided to spend an end of summer long weekend here and use it as a base to explore the tail end of Long Island. We were meant to go the weekend of the Hurricane however I pushed it out to the following weekend and having seen all the tree's that were blown down, was glad I did.

It's a bit of an obscure place to get to so after 18 months I dusted off my old drivers licence and hired a car. I was not quite game to drive in Manhattan so we caught to train to a town called Ronkonklin (not sure how to spell) and picked up the car there. It was a long weekend in the US so this was also useful in avoiding Long Island weekend traffic bedlam.

The plan ended up working ok and we made it to our hotel after eating some delicious ribs in Greenport. We stayed at a place called The Pridwin. There were not a lot of accommodation options on Shelter Island and this was meant to be one of the better ones. It was very nice but it was sooooooo expensive. The room was very small and the partial water view was probably more suited to someone who could dislocate their neck out of the window. The location was sensational and without a doubt the highlight was Chardy hour at sunset on the grass out the front.

Just down the road from the hotel was a place called the Sunset Hotel. This is owned by the same person who owns The Standard Hotel in the Meatpacking District and it defiantly has the same pretentious feel about it. We had dinner there one night and the service was typically crap, the food average and way overpriced. It was pumping however with copious amounts of trust fund kiddies and those trying to hook up with them.

We spent Saturday exploring the island. It really was an introduction to how the other half live. The affluence in this part of the world was out of control. The holiday homes were nothing short of manicured mansions and I'm sure they get used 2-3 weeks a year. Having a car made exploring so much easier. I won't even get started on the 'boats' which moored out the front of Sunset.

Sunday we went south and headed through the Hampton's to Montauk. We both really liked this place. It had a real coastal town vibe and the beach was the best one we had come across in this part of the world.  I think we'll defiantly be back here next summer. The highlight up this way was stopping by one of the roadside seafood places. The one we stopped at was called The Clam Bar and they had the most delicious lobster roles.

Monday we shut up shop and headed back via the wineries on the North Fork. This was really a beautiful part of the world and we had a ball at a winery called Sherwood Estate. It was a pretty unique place and was more an outdoors area with cruisey tunes in the background and not a bad drop to match. I was spewing I was driving. All in all a great end to summer.

Cold Spring, New York

Last month Tracy and I bagged up Dasha and got on the Metro North train and headed to a town called Cold Spring. Cold Spring is located on the Hudson River about 1.5 hours north of New York City. Quietly I'd heard it was packed with Antique and junk shops but I described this to Tracy as a 'quaint little village.'

It ended up being a classic summer Saturday afternoon and it was fantastic to get out of the city for once. The town itself is pretty small with one main street. There were heaps of very American looking houses around. What makes an American looking house? Well have a squiz at the pictures. We explored a little and then went and ate lunch at a cafe.

I think the highlight of the day was when we found this fairly empty park down by the river. For the first time ever we took Dasha off the leash and let him roam free. It was very exciting although i was quite nervous. It ended up being fine but I think the bag of treats I had nearby certainly helped out. All in all a lovely part of the world.

And Finally here is a video of the first time we let Dasha off the leash.
