Yesterday Tracy and I took the opportunity to visit the newly opened 9/11 Memorial down at the World Trade Centre. It's been open for a few months so we thought visitor access might have settled down a little. We booked our spot online and headed down there on President's Day public holiday. It was really busy but the line in moved fairly quickly.
The actual memorial is a tribute to both the 9/11 event as well as the bombing in 1993. The size of the memorial was way bigger than I expected. There are two fountains which are located in the original positions as to where the towers once stood. Water flows over the edges and then at the bottom in the middle there is a second downward falling fountain. Each fountain is surrounded by a copper plate with the names of each of the victims.
There were multiple people who were tracing the names of victims onto pieces of paper. This was quite similar to what we witnessed at the Vietnam memorial in Washington. The Memorial is still surrounded by a massive construction site where up to 3000 people a day are busy at work.
Definitely worth a visit to pay your respects.
